Driving Directions
Take I-70 approximately 30 minutes west of Grand Junction to Exit #2. Go left (south) over interstate to the Rabbit Valley area. A high-clearance vehicle is required. The road my become impassable when wet.
If time allows, north of the highway is the dinosaur "Trail Through Time" with in situ bones and quarry.
This is a self-guided field trip on public lands administered by the BLM. At the Conference, participants will receive trip instructions and literature.
this is a driving tour with multiple Fremont rock art stops and short hikes. Located 60 miles North West of Grand Junction over Douglas pass along Highway 139.
In Canyon Pintado, you'll explore 8 Ute Fremont rock art sites dating from 1200 to 1881. The panels are accessible from several short hiking trails. In 1776, fathers Dominguez and Escalante traveled through the Douglas Creek Valley and were amazed at the rock art they found and called the land "Painted Canyon" or Canyon Pintado. Some of the sites are, "Waving hands", "Kokopelli", and "White Birds". By using D Stretch on your phone, you will be able to uncover more detail.
****
A short meeting of trip leaders and participants will be announced on Saturday to answer further logistical questions and finalize times and possible carpooling for Sunday's trips.
**Waivers will be required.
(12 person max. with leaders Gayle Smith and Terri Ahern)
With spectacular views of towering rock formations and sightings of desert bighorn sheep during the fall, this 2.5 mile trail (5 miles round trip, 500 feet elevation gain/loss) follows the base of sandstone cliffs to the towering Independence Monument rock spire.
Location: From the west entrance of the monument, turn right onto Highway 340 (going east); after 2.1 miles (3.4 km) turn right just beyond mile marker #5 onto a dirt road that appears to be a driveway. The address for the three-story brown and rock home is 1901 Highway 340. Go 0.1 mile (0.2 km) to the trailhead. There is a port-a-potty at the trailhead.
Difficulty Level: Moderate, 3 hours minimum.

Owned by the Archaeological Conservancy, Shavano has 37 rock art panels and a prehistoric rock shelter. It was used by Archaic and Ute people from 1000 BCE to 1900 CE.
