Roberts Ranch Homestead, Buffalo Jump, and Second Chance Rock Shelter, hosted by Spencer Little
Roberts Ranch has never been sold and is often called one of Colorado’s “legacy ranches” with more than 16,000 acres of undeveloped and pristine land. This tour will visit the Roberts’ homestead, old French trappers’ cabin, historic buffalo jump, and the Second Chance rock cropping used by Native Americans since Paleoindian times.
Meet outside the Embassy Suites main doors at 8:30 a.m. We will consolidate car rides, if possible (parking is limited), and hand out directions. Be sure to bring your own snacks and water; no bottled water will be available. We’ll leave the Embassy Suites parking lot by 8:45 a.m. for the drive which takes approximately 50 minutes. The tours last slightly less than two hours and with an estimated return to the hotel around 12:30 p.m. Be sure to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes. This hike requires walking an easy mile or so total.
Signature Rock, Lightning Hill, and Tipi Ring Site, hosted by Ray Sumner
Roberts Ranch has been a working cattle ranch for over a hundred years and sits on land once traveled by emigrants on the Overland Trail. Before becoming a ranch, the land was used by Native Americans for countless years and whose traces can still be seen. This easy to moderate two-mile walk (one mile each way) will take you past visible tipi rings, Native American work sites, Overland Trail ruts, and to Phoebe Rock, known locally as Signature Rock, where engravings from past eras can still be seen.

Archaeology at the Foot of the Rockies: Recent Investigations at the Magic Mountain Site
Located in a sheltered valley south of Golden, Colorado, the Magic Mountain site is well known for its lengthy Middle and Late Holocene record. For more than 30 years following the 1966 publication of Cynthia Irwin-Williams and Henry Irwin’s landmark monograph, data from the site were crucial for systematizing the archaeological record of the South Platte River basin. More recent projects— including the current Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Paleocultural Research Group project—have focused on the site’s extensive and complex Early Ceramic period component. The tour will include two stops. On the field portion of the tour, led by Mark Mitchell, discussion will focus on the geoarchaeology of the site. Participants should be prepared for one-quarter to one-half mile of off-trail walking over moderately uneven ground. Following the site tour, participants will join PCRG researchers Dr. Mitchell and Chris Johnston at New Terrain Brewing in Golden for a series of talks related to the joint PCRG-DMNS work at the site from 2016-2018.
Participants will receive more information on meeting location via email. The site tour is scheduled to meet at 9:30 am in Golden and last through 11:30. The pub talks at New Terrain will begin at 1 pm.
